Girlfriend of Mary J. Blige's Father To Stand Trial

The Michigan woman who allegedly stabbed the R&B singer's father will stand trial.

A judge has ordered Cheryl White, 50, of Battle Creek to stand trial after allegedly stabbing Thomas Blige, 63, in a Jan. 23 domestic dispute, The Detroit Free Press reports.

White, who is Blige’s girlfriend, is being held in the county jail and faces up to life in prison if convicted of assault with attempt to murder.

“I was up early getting ready for school and I saw Cheryl White slashing my tires. As I went to her she started slashing me,” Blige said.

White’s attorney, Jeffrey Schroder, argued that Blige’s testimony was unclear.

Blige testified that he was cut in the throat, lung and arm but escaped to a friend’s apartment where he’d been staying because of a previous argument with White the day before.

“Me and Cheryl have serious domestic problems,” Blige said. “The day before we were fighting and the police were called. We have verbal fights multiple times. An enormous number of times.”

Blige said he didn’t try to attack White after he was stabbed.

“I didn’t chase her, I approached her,” he said. “ I was trying to embrace her out of love. I have never harmed her; I love her and I don’t like the situation she is in.”

The case was sent to circuit court for trial by Calhoun County District Judge Frank Line.
