The month of February was a busy month for the County. The month started with the move out of the Old Courthouse to prepare the way for renovations to that building. Along with Administration, offices for the Clerk, Treasurer, Register of Deeds and Equalization Department all moved across the street to the Annex Building on February 4th and 5th. The offices were well prepared and had reduced records in their offices where possible, but the move was still a major undertaking for the offices involved. Many thanks to all who participated in the move!

At the Board of Commissioners meeting on February 12th, Sheriff Troy Bevier introduced two newly promoted personnel in the Sheriff’s Office. Captain Jake Pifer and Sargent Mike Osborne were recognized for their new positions. The Sheriff also acknowledged two employees with 30 years of service. Captain James Craig and Lieutenant David Aungst each have over thirty years in the Sheriff’s Office.
Michigan Works! Southeast Director, Bill Sleight, presented his annual report on the work and services that Michigan Works performs throughout the region and specifically in Lenawee County. Both he and Misty Shulters, the Lenawee County Service Center Manager, reviewed the plans, services and accomplishments of the organization over the last year. Misty highlighted some of the activities for 2020 and Bill identified the community partnerships that make Michigan Works successful.

The board also approved a lease for office space to set up a drug testing facility in downtown Adrian. The facility will provide drug testing services for all of the court operations, including probation, and other drug testing needs in the county. The objective is to provide consistent and accurate drug tests that all parties concerned can rely on.
I want to recognize all of the employees in the Annex Building for their dedication last Thursday when they worked through some difficult conditions to meet the needs of county residents. At the start of the day, we had a communication failure that took phones and computers out of service. The employees in the Clerk’s, Treasurer’s, Register of Deeds and Equalization offices continued to serve customers to the best of their ability without the technology they have come to rely on. I want to specifically acknowledge the efforts of Jennifer and Anna in the Treasurer’s Office who used their personal cell phones to look up tax records on the internet and write hand receipts for customers paying bills. Thank you all for going the extra mile.
