Macomb County Department Of Roads Names New Highway Engineer

Wanagat, who has been with the Department of Roads for nearly nine years as a project engineer, will lead the department's engineering team.

MACOMB COUNTY, MI — Macomb County has named Scott Wanagat the new highway engineer for the Macomb County Department of Roads.

The county announced the hiring Monday. Wanagat, who has been with the Department of Roads for nearly nine years as a project engineer, will lead the department's engineering team.

“Macomb County roads connect commerce, communities and people,” Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel said. “We will continue to develop a talented and future-focused team at the Department of Roads that will respond to the infrastructure challenges of today and ensure we are positioned to be a leader in transportation networks and next generation mobility.”

Wanagat is a Macomb County native and has more than 20 years of engineering experience, county officials said. He holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Civil Engineering from Purdue University.

“Scott is an integral part of our team and is highly qualified to lead the Engineering Department,” said MCDR Director Bryan Santo. “We’re excited to welcome Scott to the leadership team and we’re confident he will continue to serve our community by providing the highest level of service and delivering quality road and bridge projects.”

The road department's engineering team includes 32 employees and is responsible for managing between $60 and $70 million worth of road and bridge construction projects annually, according to the county. Under the direction of the county engineer, the engineering staff is responsible for the design and construction engineering of all road and bridge projects under the jurisdiction of MCDR.

The Engineering Department is also responsible for conducting biannual safety inspections of the 224 bridges and structures within the Macomb County road system as well as engineering projects across the county's roads.

Wanagat said the department is talented and filled with dedicated engineers.

“I look forward to serving our community and leading the Engineering Department as we continue to strengthen and enhance Macomb County’s infrastructure and transportation network," he said.

Prior to joining the Department of Roads, Wanagat worked at Spalding DeDecker Associates, Inc. for 12 years as part of their Transportation Department including four years as an engineering intern. He lives in Macomb County with his wife and four children.
