Macomb County Father Suspected Of Child Abuse

A two-month-old girl was allegedly physically abused by her father. He was scheduled for arraignment Thursday.

MACOMB COUNTY, MI — A 27-year-old Macomb County is expected to be arraigned on child abuse charges Thursday in Clinton Township District Court. Matthew Lee Virgin was arrested Tuesday and charged with first degree child abuse, according to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office.

If convicted, Virgin could spend the rest of his life in prison. Macomb County Sheriff Sgt. Renee Yax said the abuse is physical in nature, but declined to specify injuries to Virgin’s two-month-old daughter.

Deputies were called to St. John Hospital in Detroit at about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday where the child had been scheduled for a routine visit. Police reports said she was transferred to the hospital after showing possible signs of abuse. The child is currently in stable condition.

Deputies later conducted a search of the child’s Harrison Township home and spoke with several people, including the her parents. Virgin was then taken into custody.

After arraignment, a preliminary examination will be held within about two weeks for Virgin at the district court. If probable cause is established, the case will be sent to the Macomb County Circuit Court for trial.
