Macomb County Prosecutor's Office Receives COVID-19 Grant Funding

The county plans to hire two full-time but temporary assistant prosecutors to deal with issues stemming from the coronavirus pandemic.

MACOMB COUNTY, MI — The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office has been chosen to receive a state grant for coronavirus assistance, Prosecutor Peter Lucido announced Tuesday.

The county is receiving funding from the Coronavirus Emergency Supplemental Funding grant the Michigan State Police received from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Lucido said in a news release that the additional funding will allow him to hire two full-time but temporary assistant prosecutors to deal with issues stemming from the coronavirus pandemic. It will help the county address what Lucido called an "overwhelming backlog of cases."

“Although we are still awaiting the funds, we anticipate that this is only the first small step in obtaining the much needed resources to combat the stockpiling of cases due to lack of in-person court hearings,” Lucido said. “Through hiring even temporary additional personnel we will better prepared when the courts open back up. Victims of these cases have waited long enough to see justice, begin healing, and start feeling a sense of closure.
