People Jump From Balconies As Fire Rips Through Apartment Complex

Eight people were hospitalized early Sunday when a fire spread through an apartment complex on North River Road in Mount Clemens.

MOUNT CLEMENS, MI — Residents of a Mount Clemens apartment building jumped for their lives to escape a ravaging fire that has hospitalized at least eight people and took fire crews from around Macomb County hours to put out.

Tenants at the River North Village Apartments on North River Road jumped from their own windows to escape the blaze, witnesses told Click On Detroit.

“There were people literally jumping out of a window,” one witness said.

The Mount Clemens apartment complex fire was first reported around 11:30 p.m. Saturday, according to the report. Thick black smoke could be seen from miles away, as the fire spread from unit to unit within the apartment complex.

Conditions for those injured weren't available as of early Sunday afternoon.

Fire officials have not said what they believe started the fire. It was not immediately known how many people have been displaced.
