Child Care Shooting Victim's Grandmother Seeks Financial Help For Damien

Cheryl May has started a GoFundMe campaign to help pay for her grandson's medical bills in connection with Wednesday's Dearborn shooting.

DEARBORN, MI — The grandmother of one of the victims in Wednesday’s child care shooting in Dearborn is asking for help to pay the 3-year-old’s medical bills. Cheryl May has started a GoFundMe campaign to help with Damien’s current and future medical needs.

“I'm hoping to bring some relief and comfort to my children, parents of my grandson,” she wrote on the GoFundMe page. “Please share this with all your friends and family. They need to miss a lot of time in the job to care and support Damien while he recovers from the incident.”

Two 3-year-old boys were shot at a home-based child care by a toddler Wednesday morning in the 3600 block of Harding Street on the city’s southwest side.. They remain in serious but stable condition, according to Dearborn Police.

An investigation of the incident is ongoing by the department. Exact details about how the gun was obtained by the toddler and from where in the house remain sketchy. Spokesperson Maria Miller said charges, if any, would come after Dearborn Police present the case to Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy.

May wrote that Damien was wounded in the shoulder. Dearborn Police have said the other boy suffered facial injuries.

“The medical bills will be astronomical,” May wrote on GoFundMe. “Let's help Damien and his parents get thru this! Donations will be used for hospital bills, loss of income during shooting recovery for his parents and other family expenses incurred. Any remaining minutes will go into an account in Damien's name.”

As of late Friday morning, the campaign had raised just $215 of a $10,000 goal. “Please...if you can...make a donation,” May wrote. “Everything will be appreciated and ease the pain of this incident. I will post more as time goes on. God bless the innocent babies who were injured during this incident.”
