DEARBORN, MI — Ford Motor Company is aiming to let go of 1,400 U.S. salaried employees by offering a voluntary incentive program who are eligible for retirement in December 2020.
Ford President of Americas & International Markets Kumar Galhotra told employees about the move Wednesday morning in a letter. Ford has said the move is part of a restructuring plan that began over a year ago.
"We’re in a multiyear process of making Ford more fit and effective around the world," the letter told employees. "We have reprioritized certain products and services and are adjusting our staffing to better align with our new work statement."

Eligible employees will get details about the voluntary incentive program on Sept. 8 and can accept the offer up to Oct. 23, according to the company. Approved participants would leave Ford by the end of the year, the company said.
Most of the reductions will take place in Dearborn, the company's headquarters, according to WXYZ. A company spokesperson told the TV station that Ford expects to meet its goals with the offers, but if it doesn’t, it may consider involuntary separations.
