Ford Recall Targets Vehicles With Shifter Cables That May Detach

A detached cable could allow the vehicle to be shifted into "park" without it actually being secured, allowing it to move.

DEARBORN, MI — Ford Motor Company has issued a safety recall for select Ford Transit Connect vehicles that have shifter cables to the transmission that could degrade or detach.

According to Ford, the safety recall is for select 2013-21 Ford Transit vehicles with 2.5-liter engines and 6F35 transmissions. The action affects more than 192,000 vehicles in the U.S. and federal territories as well as more than 12,600 vehicles in Canada.

The company said that the bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission may degrade or detach in affected vehicles. A damaged or missing bushing could prevent the shifter from moving the transmission to the intended gear position, Ford officials said, which could allow the driver to move the gear shift lever to park, turn the vehicle off and exit the vehicle with no instrument panel warning message or warning chime indicating the vehicle is not secured in park.

Ford said it is not aware of any reports of accidents or injuries related to the condition.

Dealers will replace the under-hood shifter bushing and add a protective cap over the shifter cable bushing, the company said. Customer notifications will begin the week of June 28. The Ford reference number for this recall is 21S24.
