The alarms, which will be installed by a fire fighter, are not available for rental properties.

DEARBORN, MI—Homeowners in Dearborn and Melvindale who need a fire alarm can get one installed free by the fire department. Residents just need to contact the city of Dearborn at (313) 943-2134 to schedule an appointment for an alarm to be installed.
The alarms are available for owner-occupied homes on a first-come-first-serve basis. Per the federally-funded programs guidelines, the fire alarms must be installed by the city's fire fighters or a designated city partner. The fire alarms, which have lithium batteries, should last 10 years.

Rental properties do not qualify for this program because under Dearborn building codes, they are required to have working alarms already. If people living in rental properties believe there are no working smoke alarms, they should call (313) 943-2134 and report this life safety violation.
