Huron Township police were called to the Karvelis' home in the 38020 block of New Boston Street around 8 a.m. on Friday when an off-duty police officer living near the home saw Karvelis and his father outside their home, prosecutors said.
Kalin Karvelis had a knife in his hand and was making stabbing motions at his father, prosecutors said.

The off-duty officer, armed with his service-weapon, told Karvelis to drop his weapon and get on the ground and held him there until police arrived, prosecutors said.
Officers entered the home and found Julie Karvelis inside with a gunshot wound to the chest, prosecutors said. She would later die from the injuries. Victor Karvelis also had been shot in the neck, prosecutors said. He was treated at a local hospital.
