Winter Weather Travel Alert: Where to Expect to Find Ice

Some untreated roads in advisory area may become very slick and dangerous, the National Weather Service said.

DETROIT, MI – The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for four southeast Michigan counties — including Wayne— through 9 p.m. Monday as freezing rain and sleet move through the area.

Other counties in the advisory area are Washtenaw, Lenawee and Monroe. The cities of Detroit, Ann Arbor and Monroe are affected.

If you’re heading out of southeast Michigan, be careful, advises MLive.com meteorologist Mark Torregrossa.

The entire state is in for some precipitation, whether it’s up to 10 inches of snow on the Upper Peninsula, to freezing rain and up to 3 inches of snow in northern Michigan. From the Thumb region west, a couple of inches of snow could fall on top of 1-2 inches of sleet.

Locally, minor sleet and ice accumulations are possible, ranging from a glazing across Wayne and Macomb counties to one-tenth of an inch across the higher terrain of western Washtenaw and Lenawee counties.

The weather service said rain will switch over to sleet mixed with freezing rain about noon, and transition to all freezing rain in the afternoon. The heaviest precipitation is expected between noon and 5 p.m.

Easterly winds will increase Monday afternoon and strengthen to 15 to 20 mph, with gusts over 30 mph.

Poor traction on untreated roads may lead to very dangerous driving conditions, the weather service said. Some power outages are possible.

The weather service said the hazards should be short-lived. Temperatures will slowly warm above freezing in the late afternoon and early evening across Wayne and Monroe counties, and the precipitation will turn over to all rain.
