1 New Coronavirus Outbreak Reported In Wayne County Schools

WAYNE COUNTY, MI — One new outbreak of the coronavirus has been reported in a Wayne County school, state health officials said Monday.

Six people at Plymouth Christian Academy in Canton have tested positive for the coronavirus, according to state health data. The six people are a combination of staff and students.

In total, 27 new outbreaks were reported in Michigan schools Monday.

Eight coronavirus outbreaks remain ongoing in Wayne County, officials reported.

Three staff members at Metro Charter Academy in Romulus tested positive for the coronavirus Oct. 12.

Thirteen staff and students tested positive for the coronavirus at Holy Redeemer in Detroit, the state reported Oct. 5.

Three students at Chapman Elementary School in Rockwood tested positive for the coronavirus, according to a Sept. 28 report.

Shumate Middle School in Gibraltar reported that three students had tested for the coronavirus, according to a Sept. 28 report.

Two students had tested positive for the coronavirus at University Liggett School in Grosse Pointe Woods, according to a Sept. 28 report.

Seventeen people at Roosevelt High School in Wyandotte had previously tested positive for the coronavirus, the state reported Oct. 12.

According to a Oct. 5 report, four students at Lutheran Westland High School in Westland tested positive for the coronavirus.

Fourteen students at Madonna University in Livonia have tested positive for the coronavirus, the state said Sept. 21.

It's important to note that a coronavirus outbreak is different than a case. A COVID-19 outbreak is defined as two or more cases with a link by place and time indicating a shared exposure outside of a household.

The information provided by the state on Monday includes K-12, college and university school name, address, number of cases and if the cases involved staff, students or both. Students or staff exposed to COVID-19 outside the school building and are not thought to have spread the virus in the school due to quarantine or self-isolation are not included in the data.

Many factors, including the lack of ability to conduct effective contact tracing in certain settings, may result in underreporting of outbreaks, MDHHS said. This information does not provide a complete picture of school outbreaks in Michigan and the absence of identified outbreaks in a school does not mean it is not experiencing an outbreak.
