1 Wayne County School Reports New Coronavirus Outbreak

WAYNE COUNTY, MI — One Wayne County school was among the 35 Michigan schools that reported new outbreaks of the coronavirus Monday.

Plymouth High School in Canton reported Monday that three people at the school had tested positive for the coronavirus, according to information provided by the state.

While only one Wayne County school was on the list of new outbreak locations, eight schools in the county remain sites of ongoing coronavirus outbreaks, according to the state.

St. Anselm Catholic School in Dearborn Heights reported on Nov. 9 that 10 people at the school had tested positive for the coronavirus.

Six staff at Davidson Middle School in Southgate also tested positive for the coronavirus, the state said on Nov. 9.

Owen Intermediate School in Belleville reported Nov. 16 that four people at the school had tested positive for the coronavirus.

Roosevelt High School in Wyandotte reported Oct. 12 that 22 people in the school had tested positive for the coronavirus.

In Canton, 20 people at Plymouth Christian Academy, 13 people at Canton High School and three staff members at Salem High School have tested positive for the coronavirus.

Schoolcraft College in Livonia reported Nov. 2 that eight people had tested positive for the coronavirus.

It's important to note that a coronavirus outbreak is different than a case. A COVID-19 outbreak is defined as two or more cases with a link by place and time indicating a shared exposure outside of a household.

The information provided by the state on Monday includes K-12, college and university school name, address, number of cases and if the cases involved staff, students or both. Students or staff exposed to COVID-19 outside the school building and are not thought to have spread the virus in the school due to quarantine or self-isolation are not included in the data.

Many factors, including the lack of ability to conduct effective contact tracing in certain settings, may result in underreporting of outbreaks, MDHHS said. This information does not provide a complete picture of school outbreaks in Michigan and the absence of identified outbreaks in a school does not mean it is not experiencing an outbreak.
