2 New Coronavirus Outbreaks Reported In Wayne County Schools

WAYNE COUNTY, MI — Two Wayne County schools have reported new outbreaks of the coronavirus, according to data released by state health officials Monday.

According to the data, three staff members at Metro Charter Academy in Romulus have tested positive for the coronavirus. Meanwhile, three students at Roosevelt High School in Wyandotte also tested positive for the coronavirus.

In total, 26 schools around Michigan reported new coronavirus outbreaks on Monday.

Eight schools in Wayne County still have ongoing coronavirus outbreaks, according to the state.

Holy Redeemer Grade School in Detroit had 13 students and staff test positive, according to an Oct. 5 report.

Chapman Elementary School in Rockwood had three students test positive in September.

Two staff members tested positive for the coronavirus at Salina Intermediate School in Dearborn in September.

Three students tested positive for COVID-19 in September at Shumate Middle School in Gibraltar.

Two students in September tested positive for the coronavirus at University Liggett School in Grosse Pointe Woods.

A combination of six students and staff at Divine Child High School in Dearborn tested positive for COVID-19 in September.

Last week, the state reported that four students at Lutheran Westland High School in Westland had tested positive for the coronavirus.

It's important to note that a coronavirus outbreak is different than a case. A COVID-19 outbreak is defined as two or more cases with a link by place and time indicating a shared exposure outside of a household.

The information provided by the state on Monday includes K-12, college and university school name, address, number of cases and if the cases involved staff, students or both. Students or staff exposed to COVID-19 outside the school building and are not thought to have spread the virus in the school due to quarantine or self-isolation are not included in the data.

Many factors, including the lack of ability to conduct effective contact tracing in certain settings, may result in underreporting of outbreaks, MDHHS said. This information does not provide a complete picture of school outbreaks in Michigan and the absence of identified outbreaks in a school does not mean it is not experiencing an outbreak.
