2 Wayne County Schools Report New Coronavirus Outbreaks

WAYNE COUNTY, MI — Two Wayne County schools were included on a list of new outbreaks of the coronavirus at Michigan schools, the state of Michigan reported Monday.

Holy Redemer Grade School in Detroit reported 11 new cases of the coronavirus, according to the state. Lutheran Westland High School in Westland saw four new cases of the virus reported, the state said.

In all, there were 24 new outbreaks of the coronavirus reported at schools across Michigan on Monday.

In addition to the new outbreaks, there are seven ongoing outbreaks at Wayne County schools, according to the state.

Chapman Elementary School in Rockwood reported Sept. 28 that three students had tested positive for the coronavirus.

Three students at Shumate Middle School had tested positive for the coronavirus, the state reported Sept. 28.

The state reported Sept. 21 that two staff members at Salina Intermediate School tested positive for the coronavirus.

Two students at University Liggett School had tested positive for the coronavirus, the state said Sept. 28.

Carlson High School reported two students had tested positive for the coronavirus, according to the state's Sept. 28 report.

A combination of six staff and students tested positive for the coronavirus at Divine Child High School in Dearborn, according to a Sept. 21 report by the state.

The state reported Sept. 14 that 14 students at Madonna University in Livonia had tested positive for the virus.

According to the state, there are currently 63 ongoing outbreaks of the coronavirus at Michigan schools.

It's important to note that a coronavirus outbreak is different than a case. A COVID-19 outbreak is defined as two or more cases with a link by place and time indicating a shared exposure outside of a household.

The information provided by the state on Monday includes K-12, college and university school name, address, number of cases and if the cases involved staff, students or both. Students or staff exposed to COVID-19 outside the school building and are not thought to have spread the virus in the school due to quarantine or self-isolation are not included in the data.

Many factors, including the lack of ability to conduct effective contact tracing in certain settings, may result in underreporting of outbreaks, MDHHS said. This information does not provide a complete picture of school outbreaks in Michigan and the absence of identified outbreaks in a school does not mean it is not experiencing an outbreak.
