Best Hotels In Michigan: You'll Be Pampered In These Classy Digs

The best hotel in Michigan is a century-old inn where guests Mark Twain and Vladimir Putin have stayed.

DETROIT, MI – Need to get away from the kids? Or maybe you just need a bit of pampering. U.S. News & World Report has released its rankings of the best hotels across the country. While none of Michigan's hotels made the Top 100 in the magazine's rankings, it offered a best-of ranking for the state.

The Grand Hotel in Mackinac Island was ranked No. 1 in the state. The hotel is more than a century old, boasts all-inclusive meal plans, and is in the middle of one of Michigan's most popular tourist destinations. It's also pricey, so be prepared to splurge, note the magazine's editors.

In their review of the hotel, editors write:

Open since 1887, this Mackinac Island mainstay boasts the world's longest front porch. Another claim to fame is the Grand Hotel's guest book: Past visitors include everyone from Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin to American author Mark Twain.

The Townsend Hotel in Birmingham and the MGM Grand in Detroit came in No. 2 and No. 3. Editors noted that The Townsend "impresses guests with its classy atmosphere, afternoon high tea service and attentive staff," while the MGM brings "a little bit of Las Vegas to downtown Detroit."

The JW Marriott Hotel Grand Rapids and The H Hotel in Midland were No. 4 and No. 5 on the magazine's list. The top 10 hotels in Michigan was rounded out by: The Henry, Autograph Collection in Dearborn; The Westin Book Cadillac Detroit; The Westin Detroit Metropolitan Airport; The Amway Grand Plaza, Curio Collection by Hilton in Grand Rapids; and The Royal Park Hotel in Rochester.

Here is the list of Michigan's best hotels.

For comprehensive list, U.S. News & World Report's ranking considered more than 24,000 luxury hotels. Hotels that received a gold badge were in the top 10 percent of ranked hotels. Hawaii’s Four Seasons Resort Lanai ranked first, followed by The Peninsula Chicago at No. 2 and The Langham, Chicago at No. 3.

About Hawaii's Four Seasons, the magazine editors wrote:

Positioned along a beautiful stretch of Hulopoe Bay sand overlooking the Pacific Ocean, this resort offers breathtaking ocean views, manicured grounds and top-notch customer service. During their stays, guests can enjoy outdoor pursuits, such as snorkeling, deep sea fishing, hiking, whale watching, scuba diving and more. Visitors use terms like "paradise" and "heaven on earth" to describe the property.

Now, good people of Michigan, take a look out your window and notice all that snow and cold. And then, re-read that paragraph above. In case you want to book a room for this weekend, it'll cost you about $1,275 a night, according to travel sites.

California and New York had the most gold badge winners with 38 and 26 gold badge hotels, respectively. There were also 24 in Florida.

Among cities, New York City ranked highest in the number of gold badge hotels with 24 — more than double that of Las Vegas and Los Angeles, which tied for second with 11. Washington, D.C. and Chicago had 1o and eight gold badge hotels, respectively.
