Brrrrr: Bitter Cold Freezes Detroit

Bundle up, Detroit: Temperatures will dip into the single digits this week, and wind chills as low as -11 are expected.

Get ready for the bitter cold. And, if you gotta go out, wear that hat, scarf and mittens – and a really thick parka.

The National Weather Service on Tuesday morning issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook alert for the Detroit area and much of southeastern Michigan. Just a ways up north, in Saginaw, a wind child advisory has been issued.

The weather service is expecting "extremely cold wind chills dropping to -5 to -14 degrees," according to the bulletin issued at 4 a.m. Tuesday. The extreme cold and wind chills are expected throughout the rest of the week. Temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday be in the single digits, and a wind chill could dip to -9 on Tuesday and to -11 on Wednesday.

Temperatures through the weekend will hit a high of the teens.

The weather service calls for snow showers on Thursday and Friday nights.
