Christmas Crash: Man Hospitalized After I-696 Pileup
Four cars were involved in a series of three crashes along the freeway on Christmas.

DETROIT, MI – A man was hospitalized with critical injuries after a pile up crash involving four vehicles along Interstate 696 near the Dequindre Road underpass on Christmas, according to a report from the Michigan State Police.
The crash occurred just before 11 a.m. Monday, according to the report. The initial crash happened as a driver was heading west on the freeway, lost control of his car and hit the median wall, leaving his vehicle facing the wrong, according to the report.
The second driver, who was in a 2006 Dodge van, tried unsuccessfully to avoid his the first car, but hit it and came to a stop in the right shoulder. The driver got out of his van and tried to pick up stuff that had spilled from the van, according to the report.

A third driver, in a 2007 Honda Accord, tried to miss the Dodge van, but overcorrected and then hit a 2013 Chrysler van. The Chrysler van then spun out of control and hit the Dodge van. The driver of the Dodge van was pinned between two of the crashed vehicles. After the driver was freed, he was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, according to state police
There were no other injuries reported in the crashes. The highway, however, was closed for about two hours while troopers investigated and the wreckage removed.
