DETROIT, MI – On an Election Day when results fell into place mostly as expected, one race – between a former police officer and embattled former state legislator – did generate some interest.
Former police officer Roy McCalister Jr. handily winning Detroit’s District 2 council seat with 59 percent of the vote over former Michigan Sen. Virgil Smith. Unofficial election night totals show McCalister garnering 11,974 votes to Smith’s 7,647.
Smith resigned his senate seat last year after going to jail on a criminal conviction for firing an assault rifle at his ex-wife’s Mercedes-Benz.
