Detroit-Area Congresswoman Games Her Way Through Trump Speech

Perhaps the Democrat from Southfield, Michigan was not moved by the president's words.

WASHINGTON, DC – As President Donald Trump spoke about revamping the nation's infrastructure during his State of the Union Address on Tuesday night, Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence sat in the House chamber of Congress – playing a game of Candy Crush on her iPhone. A photographer caught her tapping away at her phone.

She wasn't alone. Her fellow Democrats had phones in their hands, too. Footage during the address panned to the lawmakers several times, and it was a common scene with their phones.

Chip Somodevilla, the photographer from Getty Images, got the image of Lawrence at 9:42 p.m., reports the British tabloid The Daily Mail. The newspaper notes it was at that time when the president was saying, "the era of economic surrender is totally over."

Lawrence did not comment on her game-playing during the speech. However, she did comment to The Detroit News after the speech:

“When you know his policies and the things he has said and the disrespect, I cannot connect the words to the person standing there ...
“He kept talking about us as Americans. I don’t feel like I’m his America. I’ve been feeling that way for a long time.”
