Detroit Cop Dies After Hit-And-Run Crash, Driver Charged

Detroit Police officer Fadi Shukur was hit by a motorist on Aug. 4. He died of his injuries on Wednesday.

DETROIT, MI – A young Detroit police officer died of injuries he suffered in a hit-and-run accident while working crowd-control at a vigil earlier this month. His assailant, a 19-year-old Belleville man, has been charged with second-degree murder.

Detroit Police officer Fadi Shukur, 30, died on Wednesday. He suffered the injuries when hit by a driver in the early morning hours of Saturday, Aug. 4.

During a press conference on Wednesday, Detroit Police Chief James Craig memorialized Shukur and asked the public keep him and his family in their prayers. Shukur, the chief said, was on the force for a year and a half.

"He'll always be remembered for his magnetic smile," Craig said. "He would light a room up."

After Shukur's death, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced that Jonathan David Cole, of Belleville, who initially had been charged with reckless driving and failure to stop at the scene of an accident, has also been charged with second degree murder, reckless driving causing death, and failure to stop at the scene of an accident.

According to police reports, Detroit police officers were dealing with a crowd-control situation in the 18800-block of West McNichols near Stahelin Street at 2:40 a.m. on Aug. 4 when Cole hit Shukur with his car and then fled. Cole turned himself into Detroit Police the next day.

Cole, who has been in custody since Aug. 4, will be arraigned on the charges Thursday morning in district court.
