Detroit Election Winners: Duggan Cruises To Second Term

Early returns show that incumbent Mayor Mike Duggan has a wide margin over challenger Coleman Young II.

DETROIT, MI – Mayor Mike Duggan has won a second term, unofficial election night totals show. The mayor, who campaigned on the progress he's made transitioning the Motor City from bankruptcy and into one with a redeveloped downtown, had a hefty lead over his challenger Coleman Young II late on Election Night.

Unofficial Wayne County Board of Election results show Duggan had 71 percent of the vote, and leading Young, 72450 to 28164.

In his campaign, Duggan promised to continue the redevelopment of the city's downtown, and expand that growth into the city's neighborhood. Meanwhile, challenger Young, the son of the city's first African-American Mayor Coleman Young, says Duggan hasn't done enough for all of the city's people and wants more attention on the city's neighborhoods.

In a concession speech, Young told his supporters that he started a movement for all of Detroit's people, according to a report by the Detroit News.

"The campaign might be over but the passion and values are eternal," he said to cheers from supporters. "We are the voice for the voiceless. We are the hope for the hopeless."

Meanwhile at the Duggan victory party, the mayor said it's time for unity in Detroit.
