Detroit To Expand COVID-19 Vaccinations At TCF Center

The city is also planning a mass COVID-19 vaccination event for April 10.

DETROIT — Detroit is taking measures to administer more COVID-19 vaccine doses, adding to its vaccination capacity at the TCF Center as vaccine eligibility nears a significant expansion.

The city also is hosting a family vaccination day for city workers, with Mayor Mike Duggan saying he wants to vaccinate households in addition to city workers.

“We want to provide the experience that makes each person most comfortable,” Duggan said. “If you choose the drive up for your first dose, that’s where you’ll go for your second dose. The same applies if you choose the indoor location.”

People receiving their first dose of the vaccine will be able to either visit the TCF Center drive-up site or by parking on the center's rooftop deck and getting vaccinated inside the center itself beginning Monday, Duggan announced at a news conference this week.

An expansion to the indoor space at the center will allow the city to administer up to 8,000 shots per day, Duggan said. The capacity at the drive-up site is 5,000 shots per day.

Vaccinations are still required to be scheduled first by calling (313) 230-0505. As of Thursday, Detroiters eligible for the vaccine at the TCF Center include any city resident who is 16 and older and any worker working at a job site within Detroit.

Detroit Announces Employee Family Day at TCF

Duggan also announced Wednesday that city employees getting vaccinated can bring their immediate family members with them for vaccinations on April 10, so long as they are age-eligible. The appointments need to be scheduled ahead of time.

“We are getting closer to the day when city government will return to mostly normal operations and staffing. So it makes sense that we are not just protecting our employees against Covid, but protecting their households,” Duggan said. “Whether you’re a city budget analyst in city hall, a police officer on patrol, or a sanitation worker, you can call today to schedule an appointment for yourself and any age-eligible member of your household to all come down to TCF together on April 10th and get vaccinated as a family.”

The event is open to any of Detroit's 9,000 employees, as well as those who work for affiliated city agencies, such as the Detroit Land Bank, Public Lighting Authority, Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, and others, Duggan said.

The event is expected to take place from 10 a.m. to noon, based on expected demand.
