Detroit Man Accidentally Kills Neighbor As Dog Attacks Her: Police

Police have not charged the man but are still looking into what led up to the attack.

DETROIT, MI – A man accidentally shot and killed his neighbor when he tried to stop a dog from attacking her on Monday afternoon, police said. Investigators have not charged the man but expect to turn over their completed report to prosecutors for review.

Police were called to the 9500 block of Goodwin Avenue just before 7 p.m. on Monday. The man, who has a license to carry a concealed pistol, saw a dog attacking his neighbor and began shooting to stop the dog, a police spokeswoman said. The man accidentally shot the the 53-year-old in the back.

The woman later died at an area hospital. The man, who was not identified because he has not been charged, is cooperating with police, the spokeswoman said. Police, meanwhile, continue to search for the dog, who may have been wounded in the exchange. There was no indication of what made the dog attack the woman. Police are still investigating.
