Detroit People 'Most Enthusiastic' To Get Amazon's New HQ

A poll conducted by the cable business news channel CNBC shows the Motor City 's people really want the online retailer's new complex.

DETROIT, MI – Who wants to work for Amazon? Detroit people do, that's who. A poll conducted by CNBC found that more than a quarter of people from the metropolitan Detroit area who were questioned said they would be interested in working at the online retailer's new headquarters if it located here.

And, having HQ2, as it's been termed by the retailer, would be a good thing for the Detroit area, said more than three-quarters of the people polled.

The finding makes the Detroit "by far the most enthusiastic of Amazon's HQ2 prospects" for the new headquarters, according to the CNBC report.

According to the survey results, 28 percent of the people in Detroit who were contacted said they would "definitely" work at the new Amazon HQ. People in Atlanta, Houston, Miami and Los Angeles also showed similar enthusiasm for working there.

The poll also found that 77 percent of people in the Detroit area agree that having the proposed headquarters here would be a "good thing" for the area, according to the article. Other top cities, which were not quite as enthusiastic, for the headquarters were Boston (61 percent), Dallas (60 percent), Minneapolis (58 percent) and Atlanta (58 percent).

Amazon announced in September that it would spend more than $5 billion to build another HQ in North America that would house some 50,000 employees, while maintaining its current operation in Seattle, which has 33 buildings, 23 restaurants and 40,000 employees. The announcement sent economic development directors in cities across the nation on a mission to land the headquarters.

In Detroit, Mayor Mike Duggan turned to the city's online kingpin and entrepreneur, Dan Gilbert, to spearhead the city's efforts to get the facility. Gilbert is the founder and chairman of Quicken Loans.
