Detroit Teen Charged In Noel Night Shootings

The 16-year-old boy from Detroit could be sentenced as an adult if convicted of the assault with intent to murder charges.

DETROIT, MI – A 16-year-old boy has been charged with shootings during the Noel Night activities last weekend. Authorities say that Calvin Stephens, of Detroit, injured four other Detroit teens in the attack during the annual arts festival on Dec. 2.

On Friday, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said the boy would be charged with four counts of assault with intent to murder and a felony weapons charge. Stephens will be "adult designated," which means if he is convicted of the charges, the judge will have the option to sentence Stephens as a juvenile or as an adult, or give him a blended juvenile-adult sentence, Worthy's office said.

Stephens is expected to have a hearing at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Juvenile Detention Facility in Detroit, where he is being held, according to Worthy's office.

According to authorities, Stephens shot the four teens, ages 14 though 19, at 7:45 p.m. near the Detroit Institute of Arts at Farnsworth and John R streets during Noel Night. The victims were treated for gunshots at area hospitals. The event, which draws large crowds of families to the Midtown area of Detroit, was closed after the shootings occurred.

Detroit police arrested Stephens on Sunday, Dec. 3, after investigating the shootings. Police say the attack stemmed from an argument that began at a high school football game.
