"This is still in the investigation stages, so bear with us as we continue to work this case," police said at the time.
Brison was one of two children shot in a vehicle traveling on I-75, near McNichols Road, around 10 p.m. Thursday. The child, later identified as Brison Christian, was the son of the driver, Brian Christian, The Detroit News reported.
Brison is the nephew of a Detroit Police officer, authorities have since said.
"We are deeply saddened & ask that you keep Officer Christian & his family in your thoughts & prayers as they deal with the unimaginable loss of this innocent life," police said in a statement.
The other child, a 9-year-old brother to Brison, was transported to a local hospital and was initially listed in serious condition, according to police. He was later released from the hospital, according to The Detroit News.
Police said a preliminary investigation of the I-75 shooting showed that a driver entered south I-75 from 7 Mile Road in Detroit when a light-colored, four-door passenger vehicle pulled alongside them.
Someone from that vehicle opened fire, police said.
