FBI Wiretap Documents Reveal Detroit Towing Kingpin's Deals

Gasper Fiore had connections to state and local politicians — and it all benefitted his business, a report shows.

DETROIT, MI – FBI wiretap records, obtained by the Detroit Free Press, show that Detroit towing kingpin Gasper Fiore had connections across local and state politics, as well as to police officials. The documents, according to the Free Press, were briefly unsealed and resealed last week, and offered a glimpse to where the federal government's investigation into public corruption is headed.

Among the politicians named in the documents, according to the Free Press, are Detroit City Councilman Gabe Leland, former state Rep. Brian Banks, a Democrat from Detroit, and state Sen. Tom Casperson, a Republican from Escanaba, all of whom have not been charged.

The documents also detail how Fiore built his towing empire using his connections — as well as those of his daughter, Jennifer Fiore, who, according to the Free Press report, wrote a proposed amendment for the Michigan Department of Transportation. That amendment stipulated that towing companies contracted by the state would have to be pre-qualified and have five years experience, which would preclude some companies from the contracts.
