Increased Parking Fines In Detroit Leads To Lawsuit Against City

A lawsuit filed against the city of Detroit alleges that the city is making millions off of parking tickets and it is unconstitutional

DETROIT, MI- Detroit is a city on the rise, however another thing on the rise in the city is $45 parking tickets.

A new lawsuit that is being filed against the city of Detroit could potentially become costly for the city, with a proposed class action lawsuit that the city has made millions over the uses of the meters.

The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court by a citizen of Detroit and a suburban resident, they allege that the city is ripping off citizens and visitors of the city of Detroit through parking tickets and late fines.

The city of Detroit has issued about 300,00 parking tickets annually over the last three years, during this time is when the city installed the new high-tech meter system that accepts cash, credit card, and smartphone payments. The new meters have earned about millions in revenue since their installment- about $13 million in 2015 alone, but that money is being made illegally, according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit is also alleging the city is collecting and distributing parking fines at rates higher than that allowed by the city ordinance, and also people have noticed that they no longer waive $10 off of the fine if you paid your ticket within 10 days after being issued.
