Man Convicted 6 Years Ago Of Manslaughter, Yet To Be Sentenced
The case of Leroy Moon has fallen through the cracks. But, soon, he'll get his day in court.

DETROIT, MI – You might call it a prosecutorial goof. Leroy Moon probably thinks of it as good luck. Regardless, Moon, who was convicted of manslaughter in a Wayne County court six years ago, will get another day in court in January – his sentencing.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy's office apparently "lost track" of Moon's case in the years since he was convicted in December 2011 of killing a man outside his fish market in 2009, according to a report in the Detroit News. Moon, now 78, pleaded no contest to the charge manslaughter in the shooting death of the 36-year-old man, the Detroit News reported.
After his conviction, there was a pre-sentencing hearing and he was supposed to be sentenced to a year in prison, per his plea bargain agreement. But, he apparently got ill before his initial sentencing hearing, which was rescheduled. From there, his case apparently got lost, according to Maria Miller, a spokeswoman for Worthy's office.

“While this matter was pending the (assistant prosecutor) handling the case left the office, and at some point we lost track of the case,” Miller said. “Also, there were no further dates that were scheduled by the court.”
Miller told the Detroit News that the prosecutor's office became aware of Moon's outstanding case when the newspaper inquired about it.
