McDonald’s in Detroit celebrates National Coffee with a Cop Day

October 3 event brings local police officers and citizens together

McDonald’s restaurants across the country, including in Michigan, recognized National Coffee with a Cop Day on Wednesday, October 3 in partnership with local law enforcement agencies. This national one-day event brings local police officers and citizens together – over coffee – to discuss community issues and build relationships in a safe environment.

The first Wednesday of October is deemed National Coffee with a Cop Day, when thousands of police, sheriff, campus, local and federal law enforcement agencies participate in community events across the country.

Residents attended Coffee with a Cop on Wednesday, October 3 from 8 – 10 a.m. at the McDonald’s located at 4235 Woodward Ave., Detroit, MI 48201, with representatives from the Wayne County Sherriff’s Department, Wayne State Police, and Detroit Public Schools’ Police. Additionally, on October 16, Detroit Police Department Chief of Police James E. Craig was hosted at the McDonald’s at 1000 Mack Avenue.

“As the majority of McDonald’s restaurants are locally owned and operated, we look forward to hosting these events across the communities we serve, arm-in-arm beside our local police officers,” said Dominique Virgiles, who runs the Woodward Avenue restaurant. “We hope our neighbors will attend to connect with their local police, engage in open dialogue in a safe and friendly environment, or simply get to know our officers face-to-face.”

McDonald’s restaurants in the Detroit area also partner with law enforcement agencies throughout the year to encourage stronger relationships between police and community members.

“Under the leadership of Chief James E. Craig, the Detroit Police Department is constantly looking for ways to strengthen our community ties,” the Detroit Police Department said in a statement. “One way is partnering with our local McDonald's to host community events such as Coffee with a Cop. We are grateful for McDonald's commitment to community service and look forward to many more opportunities in the future.”

National Coffee with a Cop Day is supported by local McDonald’s franchise owners Dominique Virgiles and Marla Thrower.
