Overpass Replacement Requires Lane Closures Thursday

The work requires a one-day lane closures starting Thursday morning between Rosa Parks Boulevard and I-75.

DETROIT, MI — Eastbound and westbound I-94 will each have one lane open between Rosa Parks Boulevard and I-75 Thursday for crews to implement a traffic shift. The lane closures are due to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) moving into another stage on the replacement of the Second Avenue overpass above I-94 in Detroit. The closures will begin at 5 a.m. and end at 11 p.m. Thursday.

During the closure, crews will close the northbound and southbound I-75 ramps to westbound I-94. The traffic shift will allow for crews to safely construct the new bridge supports along each side of the freeway, according to a press release issued by MDOT. All lanes of I-94, along with the I-75 ramps to westbound I-94, are expected to be reopened by 11 p.m. Thursday.

MDOT crews will close the southbound M-10 (Lodge Freeway) ramp to eastbound I-94 and the John R. Street entrance ramp to westbound I-94 beginning beginning Thursday morning until fall. The ramps are being closed for safety due to the I-94 traffic shift. Detours will be posted for the ramp closures.

The entirety of the work is part of a $25.5M project scheduled to be completed in summer 2021. The new Second Avenue bridge will replace the current structure, which was built in 1954, and will be the first network tied arch bridge in the state. Traffic for Second Avenue will be detoured to M-1 (Woodward Avenue) to cross over I-94 during the replacement.

The bridge replacement is part of the I-94 modernization project in Detroit. The project aims to rebuild 7 miles of freeway and replacing more than 60 bridges between Conner Road and I-96.
