Prosecutors: Detroit Man Facing Additional Charges After Escape Attempt

Artese Davis also was charged for larceny -- for taking the handcuffs he was wearing during the escape, authorities say.

DETROIT, MI—A 23-year-old man escaped from police custody on Saturday evening, prosecutors say, and he is now facing additional charges. Among the extra charges is larceny for taking off with the handcuffs police put him in, prosecutors said on Tuesday.

Police pulled over Artese Deshaun Davis, of Detroit, for speeding near Vaughn and Joy roads late Saturday night. Officers handcuffed him, but while they tried to get him into a police cruiser, he escaped and ran away from officers, police say. The next day, they tracked down Davis near Kendall Street in Detroit and arrested him.

Police initially wanted Davis on a probation violation, according to a report by WDIZ-TV. Prosecutors now also have charged him with resisting and obstructing police, escape and larceny. He was arraigned on the charges in 36th District Court on Tuesday. Davis is expected to return to court on Sept. 12 for a probable cause hearing.
