Thousands Across Metro Detroit Without Power After Sunday Storms

Power is expected to return sometime Monday morning, in most instances, according to DTE.

METRO DETROIT — Severe thunderstorms spread across Metro Detroit late Sunday and into early Monday morning, bringing with them heavy rains and knocking out power to more than 60,000 DTE customers in southeast and eastern Michigan.

Outages included over 2,000 DTE customers in Livonia and more than 1,500 in Bloomfield Hills, according to the energy company. Nearly 4,000 people in Detroit were without power at one point Monday morning, the company reported on its outage map.

As of 6:30 a.m. Monday, the largest DTE outages were reported around Rochester and Rochester Hills. Wind damaged knocked out power to more than 3,000 customers in a stretch north of East Hamlin Road to the south of East Auburn Road. Over 2,700 customers are without power in the area of W. Tienken Road and Walton Boulevard due to wind damage, as well, DTE reported.

The company said it had 69 crews in the field working to restore electricity to companies, as of 6:50 a.m.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for much of Michigan's southern half Sunday evening and early Monday morning, with the National Weather Service in Detroit warning of penny-sized hail and winds up to 60 mph.

Several special marine warnings were put in effect along southeast Michigan's Lake Erie and Detroit River shoreline, with the National Weather Service warning of "steep waves." However, those warnings expired around 6 a.m. Monday.

Flooding caused the closure of I-94 at 9 Mile Monday morning as heavy rains caused issues for drivers on their morning commutes, but that closure has since been revised, according to WDIV.

The Michigan Department of Transportation Metro Detroit office reported that the westbound I-94 exit at Woodward was closed due to flooding around 6:50 a.m.

Tornado Lands in Southern Michigan: Report

Tornado warnings were issued in southern Michigan, along the Indiana border late Sunday with tornado radar activity reported in the area of Nile, moving northeast.

WOOD TV reported that a confirmed tornado touched down near Coldwater, adding that some structural damage and down trees were reported in the area of the twister.
