METRO DETROIT, MI — It’s been more than 75 years since the entire German line attacked Allied troops in the Battle of the Bulge, a major German offensive in World War II.

U.S. Army Pfc. Robert Shields, now 95, was in the thick of it, “pumping mortar shells out there,” he told news station WZZM in Grand Rapids, where he lives.

"We could hear those big German tanks roaring and moving around," Shields said, recalling vivid details of the 1944 battle that helped draw World War II to a close. "I knew they were going to be attacking and, sure enough, they did."
