See: Semi-Truck Dangles Precariously Over Busy Freeway

Eastbound lanes of I-94 were closed for several hours Tuesday afternoon after a semi-truck hit the guardrail of a bridge overpass.

A truck driver was lowered to safety in a dramatic rescue Tuesday afternoon as his semi-truck dangled precariously from the guardrail of a busy Detroit freeway overpass, according to news reports.

The driver of the semi was unhurt in the accident that occurred about 2:30 p.m. The accident shut down Interstate 94 for several hours for cleanup of a fuel spill. All eastbound lanes of Interstate 94 at Wayne Road in Romulus – except for the right lane, which was already closed for repairs – reopened about 5:30 p.m.

A ladder was raised at the crash scene so the driver, who was still inside the cab of his truck, could be lowered to safety. He was rescued about 45 minutes after the crash.

Traffic backed up to Interstate 275. Gawkers caused more delays in westbound traffic as they slowed to look at the unusual site, Michigan of Transportation spokeswoman Diane Cross said.
