Bring Your Unused Prescription Drugs To This Event

Turn in the drugs anonymously. Police then will destroy them.

FARMINGTON HILLS, MI – Residents can safely and anonymously remove prescription drugs from their homes at a take-back event at the Farmington Hills Police headquarters on Saturday, April 28. Farmington Hills Police and the Drug Enforcement Agency will host the event.

Prescription drugs are accepted anonymously and in any type of container. No identifying information is required. Residents from any city may participate in the event. The collection will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the police station at 31655 11 Mile Road.

Farmington Hills police collected more than 159 pounds of prescription drugs during a similar event in October. After the event, the drugs are destroyed by the DEA. Nationwide some 456 tons of prescription drugs were collected in drug take-back events in October.

Recreational use of prescription drugs is a serious problem among teens and young adults, police said. According to the National Safety Council, teens are more likely to have abused a prescription drug than an illegal street drug; 70% of those who abused prescription painkillers reported getting them through friends or relatives. Expired, unused or unwanted prescription drugs accessible in homes can fuel this abuse and are an unacceptable risk to public health and safety, police said.
