Farmington Hills To Accept Inspection Requests Via Email

The city will end its system of taking inspection requests via phone, turning to the Internet instead.

The City of Farmington Hills Building Division says it’s streamlining the process for contractors and residents who need a building, electrical, mechanical or plumbing inspection. In past, people called in requests to a phone line, leaving voicemail for inspectors. The inspection request phone line has been deactivated, officials say, and people must now submit inspection requests exclusively via email at BDInspectRequest@fhgov.com.

The city says email requests simplifies the inspection process by allowing people to send clear written messages and because the email messages provide a time and date stamp of sorts for each request. Contractors and residents who want an inspection must provide the following information in their email request:

  • Type of inspection (building, electrical, mechanical or plumbing)
  • Permit number for the project
  • Address for the inspection
  • Preferred date for the inspection
  • Contact phone number (optional if email correspondence is preferred)

Once an email is submitted, the Building Division staff will reply. Inspections take place Monday through Friday, from 9:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., and next-day service is not always possible. A few common repairs or improvements that require a permit include installing a shed, roofing work, adding siding, or replacing windows, sprinkler systems, sump pumps, furnaces, and air conditioners. For a complete list of projects requiring a city permit, visit the city online.
