Farmington Hills Mercy Slugger Shatters State Homerun Record

Abby Krzywiecki hit her 19th homerun of the season in last weekend's Division 1 championship game.

Farmington Hills, MI — Farmington Hills Mercy not only won the district softball championship Saturday, but senior Abby Krzywiecki, who plays first base, also shattered the state record for the most homeruns in a single season.

Krzywiecki found a spot in the record books with a two-run homer — her 19th of the season — in the seventh inning of the Division 1 tournament at Livonia Stevenson, The Farmington Observer reports. Farmington Hills Mercy won the game, 7-0.

“It just shows that my hard work has paid off,” Krzywiecki said. “I know I can produce good numbers if I put a good swing on it, and that’s what I’ve been working on.

“My mentality is my No. 1 thing. I’ve been working on mechanics since I was really young, and I think I’ve mastered a lot of things. But I think my mentality is overtaking it.”

Three players shared the old record of 18 homers in a season: Madison James, of Romeo (2015); Camri Grace, of Williamston (2014) and Melinda Van Gillis, of Pentwater (1979).
