“Half Your Cake and Eat It, Too!” Desserts with Half the Sugar Never Tasted So Good!
Registered Dietician Shares Tips and Recipes for Satisfying Your Sweet Tooth without the Guilt

Let’s face it we love our sugary treats with the average American consuming over 126 grams a day now that’s a lot of sugar that is more than what you would find in a liter bottle of soda. The American Heart Association recommends limiting the amount of added sugars you consume to no more than half of your daily discretionary calories allowance. For most American women, that’s no more than 100 calories per day, or about 6 teaspoons of sugar. For men, it’s 150 calories per day, or about 9 teaspoons.
If you think reducing the amount of sugar you consume is hard its actually easier than you think. Those who are calorie conscious, yet have a sweet tooth, can still enjoy the desserts they love without the guilt.
Halloween is upon us and Halloween candy sales are expected to hit $2.7 billion this year, that’s a lot candy and trick or treaters not to mention our own hands dipping into that candy bowl or buying all the delicious looking desserts.

“This is the time of year we are going to see treats everywhere,” said Registered Dietician Patricia Bannan. “One tip I give you always want to have fresh fruit around the house so you can always grab something healthy when you want to have something a little bit sweet. My philosophy is everything in moderation so you can have almost anything as long as you don’t have too much of it. The other thing is there are baked goods everywhere. So a tip I like to us is you can replace half the sugar in any baked recipe with the zero calorie sweeteners Stevia. You’re going to cut down on calories and sugars.”
“I love the Stevia In The Raw® Baker’s Bag,” said Bannan. “It is formulated so that one cup has the same sweetness as one cup of sugar. And when you substitute up to a cup you can save 700 calories. The only tip I give is that you don’t want to substitute more than half of the sugar in the recipe and that’s because only sugar can give you that proper browning, raising and caramelizing that you are looking for in a baked good.”

One of Bannan’s favorite recipes using Stevia In The Raw® Bakers Bag is Pistachio Coconut Lemon Squares (Using ½ Stevia lowers overall sugar by 17 grams or 50%)
Bannan in partnership with Stevia In The Raw® developed a free eCookbook “Half Your Cake and Eat It Too”, which shows how replacing about half the sugar with Stevia In The Raw in any baking recipe will help reduce sugar and calories.
