Here’s How Much Living Space $1,100 Will Get You in Detroit
RENTCafé new report reviewed how much space you could rent across Michigan for $1,100

After a year of social distancing and stay-at-home regulations caused by the ongoing pandemic, space has become increasingly important to renters. To see where apartment dwellers can get the most bang for their buck, they looked at how much space they can rent on a budget of $1,100, which is close to the state’s average monthly rent of $1,066, in 63 Michigan cities.
Their findings show renters in Detroit get the least apartment space in the state. Here’s why:
- Finding a spacious rental on a budget proves to be hard in Detroit. For $1,100, apartments in the city offer 790 sq. ft. on average, ranking as the second location in the Detroit Metro Area where renters get the least space for this much money.
- At the metro level, $1,100 stretches the least in terms of living space in Dearborn (777 sq. ft.), while the roomiest apartments for this budget can be found in Taylor — 1,269 sq. ft.
- Renters interested in getting the most bang for their buck should consider looking for apartments outside of the metro area. Just 70 miles outside of Detroit, for $1,100, Flint apartments offer almost twice as much living space than the big city — 1,403 sq. ft.
- Michigan is a great place to call home, as most cities here offer relatively spacious apartments. On average, you can get 934 sq. ft. of living space for $1,100 in the state, more than the 651 sq. ft. you can rent for the same amount in the top 100 most populous cities.

Throughout the state, the size of apartments you can rent on a $1,100 budget varies from 608 sq. ft. in Ann Arbor to more than twice as much space in Flint (1,403). Notably, although they fall on opposite ends of our ranking, these two Michigan cities are located only 50 miles from one another.

In the Detroit metro, Taylor apartments tend to offer more living space for that money. Here, you can get 1,269 sq. ft. for the monthly rent of $1,100. Roseville and Brownstown Township also prove to be great cities to live in because the space you could get here would also be substantially large of 1,095 sq. ft. and 1,093 sq. ft., respectively.
On the other hand, the least space in this area is found in East Lansing, where you can get only 797 square feet, considerably less than the rest of the metro.
