GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Over the past several years, BISSELL Pet Foundation has received feedback from thousands of shelters across the country who experience overcrowding after Independence Day. Why? Intake rates skyrocket on July 5 because fireworks inflict fear and anxiety in pets, which can trigger a fight or flight response.

If your pet escapes from your yard, be sure to check your local animal shelters promptly, as they may have been brought in from the street. Over 35% of lost pets are euthanized after failing to reunite with their owners.

This is why microchipping your pet is so important,” said Cathy Bissell, Founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation. “A microchip is not a GPS, but it will surely increase your chances of reuniting with your pet. To be proactive before the Fourth of July, make sure your pet’s chip is registered to you with the most up-to-date contact information.”

When a microchip is scanned by a shelter or veterinarian, the chip’s unique identification number will be linked to your contact information in the database of registries.

From fireworks shows to backyard barbeques, pet owners are encouraged to keep pets inside, check on them often and create a safe space where they can decompress from the festivities.

BPF’s mission to find every pet a home starts with adoption and ends with responsible pet ownership. For more tips on how to keep your pet safe this Independence Day, visit www.bissellpetfoundation.com.
