Lice Clinics of America Debunk Myths and Gives Tips

Prevent, stop the spread of and treat head lice for your child

September is Head Lice Awareness Month

Head lice are found worldwide. In the United States, infestation with head lice is most common among pre-school children attending child care, elementary schoolchildren, and the household members of infested children. Although reliable data on how many people in the United States get head lice each year are not available, an estimated 6 million to 12 million infestations occur each year in the United States among children 3 to 11 years of age n the United States, according to the CDC.

“With the kids back in school in the classroom now, socializing, playing and working together on school projects we are more aware of it this time of year,” said Dr. Krista Lauer, medical director, Lice Clinics of America. “Head lice do not spread any diseases. They do not cause any long term health issues. They are really nothing more than a medical nuisance. There a lot of myths and stigmas about head lice; head lice don’t jump and they don’t hawk. They are not dangerous. They simply mean your children have close social interactions with each other.”
