Livonia Ranked No. 2 Among Worst Speed Trap Cities

According to a new list, compiled by the National Motorists Association (NMA), you may want to avoid driving through some of our neighboring cities. 

The NMA ranks Livonia as the second worst city in the U.S. and Canada for speed traps. The state of Michigan ranked No. 5 overall on the list of worst speed traps in the U.S. and Canada.

The advocacy group, according to its website, is "dedicated to the protection of motorists’ rights and freedoms. The NMA was instrumental in repealing the 55 mph National Maximum Speed Limit. Since then, the organization has fought for reasonable speed limits, an end to speed traps, fairer traffic courts and against using traffic tickets to generate revenue."

The report was compiled using five years' data from the organization's website, The National Speed Trap Exchange. Six other Michigan cities got a special mention.

"Motorists who visited The National Speed Trap Exchange within the past five years complained overwhelmingly about opportunistic law enforcement tactics in Romulus, Livonia, Allen Park, Redford, Taylor, Northville and Dearborn Heights," according to a press release by the organization. "They identified 187 specific locations in those seven cities, voting a staggering 6,348 to 842 (88.3 percent) to affirm that each deserved the speed trap label."
