Yellow Scope Science Kits Inspire Young Girls' Science Dreams

Even in 2021, female scientists are a rarity, especially in certain fields. According to the National Science Board, women make up only 28% of the science and engineering workforce. After meeting at a science fair at their daughters’ school, Marcie Colledge, PhD and Kelly McCollum, MPH were inspired to find a way to break the cycle of young girls losing interest in science, which reports have shown typically begins to happen in middle school. Pulling from their knowledge as professional scientists, teachers and moms they launched Yellow Scope, a series of science kits and experiments designed to foster children’s, particularly young girl’s, interest in science.
“Science kits for girls tend to be pink, sparkly and the outcome is usually producing a beauty or makeup product, whereas science kits for boys focus on physics, chemistry and feature a variety of colors,” said Kelly McCollum, Co-Founder of Yellow Scope. “By contrast we designed the Yellow Scope kits to focus on fundamental scientific concepts and provide high-quality lab equipment and supplies including plenty of reagents so girls and boys can perform the experiments multiple times, get excited about mastering them and gain confidence in their abilities to be scientists in the future,” Marcie Colledge, Co-Founder of Yellow Scope added.
Based on middle school science curriculum, each kit is carefully designed to teach fundamental scientific concepts in a manner that is relatable to children’s everyday lives. Instead of memorizing a theory or formula from a book, kids learn that science is approachable and fun. Yellow Scope science kits include real, high-quality lab equipment and supplies, and a full color lab notebook that engages kids by providing detailed experimental instructions, relevant scientific background, quizzes, fun facts, and space to doodle ideas and record observations. Because children learn best when they are able to be creative and build confidence when they are able to repeat an activity and master it, each kit also comes with plenty of reagent so kids can reuse the lab equipment, repeat experiments and even design their own.

There are four Yellow Scope science kits that focus on different fundamental concepts of science – “Foundation Chemistry: Beakers + Bubbles”, “Acids, Bases + pH: Cabbage Chemistry”, “Paper Chromatography: The Art + Science of Color” and “DNA + Traits: From Code to Creatures”. Each kit can be used to perform dozens of experiments and activities that are outlined in the accompanying lab book. Additional ideas are also available on the Yellow Scope blog including growing homemade rock candy and eggshell geodes to holiday-themed experiments like exploding Halloween bags and snowman dough.
Yellow Scope science kits are available individually and as two-pack or four-pack discounted bundles. For more information and purchasing, visit: https://yellow-scope.com.
