Search For Lost Cats Helped Cat Shelter, Other Pet Owners
While Farmington Hills' Guinness record cats were confirmed lost in a house fire, their "fur parents" search helped countless other felines.
Will and Lauren Powers, the Farmington Hills couple whose Guinness record-holding cats died in a house fire in November, posted an update on their situation Sunday. While still mourning the loss of Cygnus, Arcturus and Sirius, the couple are working through their grief and have adopted two Bengal kittens, they said in a Facebook post. The couple also say the attention their case drew helped many other area felines, including those in the care of the Ferndale Cat Shelter and its “Catfe.”
“The only feelings that can override the bad ones are the good ones we have when we think about how lucky we were to be fur parents to Cygnus, Sirius, and Arcturus,” Will and Lauren Powers wrote. “Because of our donation and the generous donations of others that we collected for our charity after our tragedy, we were able to fully renovate the Ferndale Cat Shelter Catfe Lounge of which Will is the President.”
In addition to the donations to the shelter, the search for the Powers’ missing cats and the $100,000 bitcoin reward offered for their return led to the capture and safe return of six cats resembling the Powers’ pets to their grateful owners. The search reunited one cat with owners who’d been searching for him for over 18 months. That cat, “a big Savannah Cat like Arcturus,” according to the Powerses, was found more than 50 miles from its home.

Will and Lauren Powers, who both practice family medicine in the area, say they plan to spend the next year traveling to national parks in an RV. Accompanying them on the journey are two new additions to the family: Polaris Sirius Powers and Hyperion Procyon Powers, two bengal kittens the Powerses call "an homage to Sirius, our rescued bengal from Great Lakes Bengal Rescue.” The family have begun rebuilding their home, and both Will and Lauren Powers plan to resume medical practice once they complete their travels and feel more fully recovered from the trauma of losing their home and pets to a fire.
