Detroit Police Officer Charged With Assaulting Ferndale Cook
Victim In Meijer Beating Is Suing For $25 Million

Wednesday, Wayne County Prosecutor Kim Worthy announced felony assault charges against Detroit Police Officer Lonnie Wade, 65. In October, While moonlighting as a security guard at the Meijer on West 8 Mile, just blocks from the Ferndale city line, Wade confronted David Bivins, 24, over items in his cart. After Bivins showed Wade a receipt for the items, Wade, wearing his official Detroit police uniform, struck Bivins in the face and head with baton, breaking teeth.
Bivins, who works as a cook in Ferndale, is now represented by attorney Geoffrey Fieger. In a press conference at the famed litigator’s office, Bivins said he has yet to watch video the beating in its entirely. Bivins said he’d planned on becoming a police officer, but that incident changed his mind.
“I would like to believe that police officers in a way police themselves, but if that is true why are we here today?” he asked.

Bivens has filed a lawsuit against Meijer, Wade, three other Meijer security guards and a second Detroit police officer working at the 8 Mile location. He hopes to net $25 million. Wade has been charged with felonious assault, assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder and two counts of misconduct in office.
