Ferndale Mom Renews Vaccination Fight

Rebecca Bredow wants to stop her son from receiving additional vaccinations.

FERNDALE, MI — A Ferndale mother jailed earlier this month for failing to follow a court order to vaccinate her son is fighting to keep him from being further vaccinated. Rebecca Bredow will go back in front of Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Karen McDonald and will bring an expert on vaccination with her, according to a Detroit Free Press report.

Bredow spent five days in jail on a contempt charge for violating McDonald’s order. In her ruling, the judge said she had a history of making child-rearing decisions without consent from her ex-husband, James Horne.

"I understand you love your children. But what I don't think you understand is that your son has two parents, and dad gets a say," said McDonald. "It's clear to me that you don't care about orders even if you agree to them, which you did. Your attorney signed that order."

McDonald granted temporary custody to him and ordered the boy to be properly vaccinated. The judge later ordered the child spend equal time living with Bredow and Horne. As part of her new request, Bredow wants to revisit the custody arrangement, the Free Press reported.
