Ferndale Parking Deck Closer to Becoming Reality

Ferndale addresses parking needs on the west side of Woodward.

FERNDALE, MI — Ferndale's first parking deck is in the works after a summer study of the issue.

Members of the downtown parking committee have been searching for the best location for a four-level parking facility and believe that the lot at at West Troy and Allen would be a good fit.

City Council is expected to approve the site in the next meeting on Oct. 24.

Mayor Dave Coulter says that the city's parking needs are needed mostly on the west side of Woodward, particularly on weekends when surface lots are filled.

“We’re going to start moving forward on the parking deck, which has been a need in our downtown for over a decade,” the Mayor told the Daily Tribune.

Assistant City Manager Joseph Gacioch says that the goal is to almost double the parking available at the West Troy and Allen surface lot to 350 spots. Groundbreaking for the garage could begin as soon as spring 2017 he said.

The Daily Tribune reports that plans for the parking project include incorporating the ability to add two-floors of residential or office space on top of the structure in the future. Additionally, the city wants to build commercial or retail space at the street level.

Mayor Coulter says that initially, two parking structures were planned, “One on the west side of Woodward and one on the east side.” But right now, the parking demand on the east side is not an immediate need.
